
Software engineers in Mexico reported a median annual salary of $31,600 in 2025, based on our analysis of the public Stack Overflow survey. That figure covers 100 respondents in selected software roles and counts annual compensation in US dollars.
That is a self-selected survey figure in US dollars. A statutory salary, a hiring budget, a loaded employer cost, an EOR invoice, and an outsourcing rate are all different things. It is also not your all-in cost: you build that from a real peso offer, not from this number.
Key Findings
Median reported annual compensation was $31,583, rounded to $31,600, among 100 selected respondents.
The middle half of compensation spanned $18,950 to $57,903.
Back-end respondents reported a $40,611 median; smaller front-end and desktop groups were withheld.

For 2026 planning, the range, the experience bands, and the cost distinctions matter more than the rounded headline.
Mexico software engineer salary: key findings
Here is the range around that headline.
The middle half of reported pay runs from $18,950 to $57,903. That range matters more than a single "average salary" figure, because role, experience, employer, location, and pay mix all move the number.
The mean sits above the median because a few high earners pull it up. Headline with the median, and use the quartiles to see how wide the spread is.
How the salary analysis was built
The source is the public Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025. The reproducible slice applies these rules:
country equals Mexico;
ConvertedCompYearlyis greater than $5,000 and less than $500,000;the respondent selected full-stack, back-end, front-end, or desktop and enterprise applications as a developer role; and
compensation is kept in the survey's annual US-dollar field.
Stack Overflow fielded the survey from May 29 to June 23, 2025 and converted salaries to US dollars using exchange rates from June 25, 2025.
The public file contained 286 Mexico responses. Of these, 160 selected one of the four included roles, 111 reported converted annual compensation, and 100 remained after the stated compensation filter. The $5,000 lower bound is an analyst-applied quality-control rule, not a Stack Overflow rule or a Mexican wage floor.
The result was independently reproduced from the public microdata on August 10, 2026.
The filter gives a useful software-role sample without pretending to cover every technical job. Mobile, DevOps, data, and management roles need their own evidence.
Survey limitations
Stack Overflow participation is voluntary, so respondents form a self-selected sample rather than a random census of Mexican software engineers. Weighting the result into a national workforce estimate would overstate what the sample can support.
Reported compensation may include bonuses and benefits, and the survey's converted annual figure also reflects the currency and conversion process behind each response; contractual base salary in a Mexican employment agreement remains a different measure.
The final slice covers more than employees. Eighty-seven respondents reported being employed, 12 identified as independent contractors, freelancers, or self-employed, and one reported not being employed. “Reported annual compensation” reflects that mixed population more accurately than “employee base salary.”
The analysis helps frame the market. A decision about hiring developers in Mexico still needs current role-specific evidence from candidates, recruiters, employers, and actual offers.
Software engineer compensation by experience
Compensation rose through the first four experience bands, then dipped in the 16-plus-year band.
Reported experience and job-title seniority are different measures. The 0–2-year band has only eight respondents, so its median is especially fragile. Keep the 16-plus dip visible; smoothing it away would turn a descriptive sample into an invented progression.
The wide interquartile ranges matter too. Pay varies a lot within one experience band: a principal engineer on a regulated platform and a product-focused full-stack engineer can be in different markets with the same number of years.
What “by role” means in this dataset
The 100-person sample is composed of four single-select developer-role categories:
Each respondent appears in one category. The back-end result describes this sample alone because experience, employer, industry, location, and work scope can differ between the groups. We withhold the front-end and desktop or enterprise medians: six and seven respondents are too few for useful standalone estimates.
For workforce planning, define the role from the work rather than mapping a title to a country average:
A role scorecard produces a more defensible salary range than the label “senior software engineer.”
Technology signals from the salary sample
The survey slice also shows which technologies appeared frequently among its respondents. Multiple selections were allowed.
These are the tools this sample said it used. How skilled someone is, how deep, and how many years they have are separate questions.
Use the list to design an assessment. For React, test whether a candidate can debug rendering performance, evolve a design system, build accessible components, and make a sound server-versus-client decision.
Reported compensation versus loaded employer cost
Four measures routinely get mixed together:
Don't apply an employer-cost percentage straight to the $31,600 median. The survey figure may already include bonuses and benefits, and it is USD from one survey. A payroll base is something else, tied to a specific state.
Components beyond contractual salary
Under Mexico employment law, an employee can create costs for:
minimum aguinaldo;
vacation premium and service-based vacation capacity;
IMSS employer contributions;
INFONAVIT;
state payroll tax;
PTU where applicable;
telework equipment and cost duties;
voluntary benefits, bonus, equity, and allowances;
payroll, HR, legal, accounting, and entity administration; and
termination or settlement under the actual scenario.
The percentage changes with salary: some social-security items use the UMA, others the integrated salary base, work risk varies, and contributions hit a ceiling.
Here is that effect in one Mexico City scenario, run at three salary levels under the same assumptions:
The uplift falls as salary rises, because the fixed UMA item matters more at low salaries and the 25-UMA contribution ceiling caps the high end. That is why no single "Mexico employer cost" percentage is defensible.
The 32.4% row is the MXN 50,000 example. It excludes PTU, telework, voluntary benefits, administration, EOR fees, FX, and termination, so the real all-in cost runs higher than the table.
How EOR and outsourcing prices are built
An employer of record in Mexico invoice starts with pay, then adds statutory employer costs, benefits, a platform fee, FX, and equipment. A staff augmentation price also covers leave, recruiting, replacement, overhead, and margin. Managed delivery adds architecture, delivery management, QA, security, and outcome risk on top.
A comparable decision sheet therefore uses separate columns:
employee compensation;
employer cost;
intermediary fee and pass-throughs;
provider delivery overhead and margin; and
buyer-side management and transition cost.

Build a salary range for an actual role
Start by choosing a hiring model. Direct employment, augmented capacity, and managed delivery place different costs and responsibilities in the buyer's column.
1. Define the work
Write the outcomes, system boundaries, technologies, production risk, stakeholder interaction, and support expectations, then decide whether the position is an employee role or part of a managed service.
2. Choose the labor market
State the work location, remote or hybrid policy, working-hour requirement, travel, and language needs for nearshore software development in Mexico, since a nationwide remote role and a hybrid role tied to one city draw from different candidate pools.
3. Gather multiple evidence lanes
Use the survey distribution as one input. Then add what recruiters are seeing this month, what candidates actually ask for in offers, and your own internal pay equity. Record the date and pay definition on each.
4. Price the full employment package
Price each layer separately. Include contractual salary, variable compensation, statutory employer cost, voluntary benefits, equipment, telework, administration, and termination planning. Keep any USD conversion dated.
5. Test the range in the hiring funnel
Once the role is live, your own funnel beats any national average. If five good candidates all decline on pay, the range is wrong — fix it before the next round.
Compensation decisions beyond base salary
A competitive package can include private medical cover, life insurance, food support, savings, bonuses, equity, equipment, connectivity, and training, though what each item costs — and whether it is taxable or contractual — depends on the company.
Benefit value is local, so test the package and record which items are contractual, which are discretionary, and which are taxable or counted in contributions.
Of the 94 people in the salary slice who answered the work-location question, 47 said they work remotely, so remote work is present in the sample but that says nothing about how common it is nationwide.
The remote vs hybrid work decision should follow access to talent, collaboration needs, employee expectations, security, and the actual Mexican telework arrangement.
Questions for salary data and compensation vendors
Ask the same questions of every source:
What population does the number represent?
Is it base salary, cash compensation, or total compensation?
What currency, exchange-rate date, and conversion method were used?
Is the figure employee-reported, employer-reported, advertised, or inferred?
Which roles, levels, locations, industries, and company types are included?
What is the sample size and collection period?
Are bonuses, equity, benefits, and allowances included?
Is the statistic a mean, median, percentile, or modeled estimate?
Are contractor invoices and employee salaries mixed?
Can the provider show a distribution rather than one point estimate?
If those questions are unanswered, the number is not ready for a hiring plan.
GSC's defined Stack Overflow 2025 slice had a mean of $39,928 and a median of $31,583. The median is the better headline because the distribution is pulled upward by higher values. Both describe the same self-selected sample.

The 0–2-year experience band had a median of $11,806, but it contained only eight respondents and is too small for a confident junior salary benchmark. Obtain current role- and location-specific evidence.
Reported medians were $48,954 for 11–15 years of experience and $46,849 for 16-plus years; these bands describe reported years rather than job-title seniority, and the final dip should remain visible.
